Building Permits

The City of Atlanta has adopted the Standard Building Code and National Electric Code for construction in the city. Building permits are required before the start of any new construction or sustantial remodeling and all work must be done according to the codes.

The City of Atlanta has zoning and planning ordinances in place and builders and developers should contact the city for zoning requirements before building.

If you are painting, carpeting or building shelves, a BUILDING PERMIT IS NOT NEEDED.

If you are renovating, adding rooms, moving walls, adding restrooms, etc., A BUILDING PERMIT IS NEEDED.

TO RECEIVE A BUILDING PERMIT, THE FOLLOWING IS NECESSARY:

  1. A set of plans must be furnished.
  2. Submit a completed building permit application supplying the following information: A. Total value of the building. B. Square footage of construction or addition. C. Description of project-renovation, new construction, etc. D. Contractor's name. E. Signature of contractor on Standard Building Code and National Electrical Code compliance statement.
  3. Submit building permit payment. The cost is determined from the fee schedule provided with the application.

Once a Building Permit Card if issued, it must be displayed at the construction site during construction.

ADDITIONAL PERMITS may be needed for electrical or gas involvement: 1. Electrical permits are $5.00 each for new service or if the meter is disconnected. 2. Gas permits are $5.00 each for new service or if the meter is disconnected.

Inspections

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTIONS are required during new construction and renovations.

ELECTRICAL INSPECTIONS are required during construction and upon completion of the project.

FIRE INSPECTIONS are required for all buildings used by the public.

A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY is required for a business and will be issued upon a successful inspection for fire safety.

Building Permit Fees

$100.00 AND LESS No fee, unless inspection is required, in which case a $5.00 fee for each inspection shall be charged.
$101.00 to $2,000 $5.00 per thousand or fraction thereof.
$2001.00 to $15,000 $10.00 for the first $2,001.00 plus $3.00 for each additional thousand or fraction thereof, to and including $15,000.00.
$15,001.00 to $50,000.00 $49.00 for the first $15,000.00 plus $2.50 for each additional thousand or fraction thereof, to and including $50,000.00.
$50,001.00 to $100,000.00 $136.50 for the first $50,000.00 plus $2.00 for each additional thousand or fraction thereof, to and including $100,000.00.
$100,001.00 to $500,000.00 $236.50 for the first $100,000.00 plus $1.25 for each additional thousand or fraction thereof, to and including $500,000.00.

MOVING OF BUILDING OR STRUCTURE: $50.00(does not include mobile homes.)

DEMOLITION OF BUILDING OR STRUCTURES: $25.00

FAILURE TO OBTAIN A PERMIT: Fees shall double.
