Bessie Coleman Provides Inspiration
2/1/2006
The remarkable accomplishments of an Atlanta native continue to inspire young people eight decades after her death. Born in 1892, Bessie Coleman imagined a better life for herself and made that dream come true through sheer determination. Refusing to be blocked by racial and gender barriers of the early 20th Century, Coleman learned to fly in Europe and returned to the United States to share her vision with students.
The Bessie Coleman Club is a group devoted to increasing the chances of success for youth ages 10 to 18 years. The organization meets on a regular basis, and like adult service groups, challenges members to learn through service to the community.
Members of the Club are again sponsoring the annual Black History Parade in Atlanta. The event, planned for Saturday, February 25th, is in its third year. For more information or to participate, contact Melody Cranford at 903-691-8845 or Elanderia Rowe at 469-223-2019.
