Atlanta Historical Museum Celebration

9/25/2004
The Atlanta Historical Museum, located in the restored Atlanta and Pacific Railway Depot, opened its doors quietly on April 30th in honor of Bessie Coleman, the famous aviation pioneer born in Atlanta. At 10 AM on Saturday, July 3rd the museum hosted a ribbon cutting at the entrance on North East Street, signifying its official opening.

The Atlanta Historical Museum is a children’s interpretive museum. The exhibits are designed to introduce the history of Atlanta and the people who lived here in a brief but enjoyable way. Interactive displays such as a 2/3 scale model of a Curtiss Jenny bi-wing plane and a full sized freight wagon help make “learning” more fun for visitors.

Those who braved the elements to attend the July celebration enjoyed demonstrations of pottery making, flint napping, native tool use and hunting for ancestors. Summer refreshments including lemonade and watermelon were provided for children of all ages. Each student received a glider kit to remember the eventful day.
