Atlanta Historical Museum

The Mission of the Atlanta Historical Museum is to institute and encourage historical inquiry, to collect, preserve and exhibit material of history and to spread historical information, especially as it pertains to the City of Atlanta. To accomplish this Mission, the education of Atlanta’s children is the primary focus of the Museum. Varied aspects of Atlanta’s history and prehistory which affected and involved children are collected, interpreted and displayed.

Atlanta Historical Museum

The exhibits in the Museum provide explanations that are suitable for students of all ages. Timelines show the development of Atlanta and how children were not only affected but how they were involved. Static and interactive displays allow students to discover that history can be fun and interesting.

The permanent exhibits include a diorama depicting the Texas and Pacific Railway as it would have appeared between 1890 and 1910, an array of local items depicting the development of Commerce in Atlanta between 1850 and 1950, railroad and depot equipment, cotton processing from field to gin, military stories and artifacts, a wagon and plane for students to explore, Bessie Coleman photos and artifacts with interpretations of the Caddo culture.

Atlanta Historical Museum

The Atlanta Historical Museum is located in the restored Texas and Pacific Railway Depot at 101 North East Street in downtown Atlanta. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 1 PM until 4 PM or by special arrangement with museum staff. For more information call 903-796-1892.
