Acquisition and Collections Policy

The Atlanta Historical Museum was established to institute and encourage historical inquiry; to collect, preserve and exhibit the material of history; and to spread historical information especially as it pertains to the City of Atlanta, Texas.

The Atlanta Historical Museum shall endeavor to collect and preserve the following by donation, purchase or loan:

  1. Original historic artifacts pertaining to the development, economy or culture of the City of Atlanta as well as original historic objects relating to the development or history of the railroad. In addition, any artifacts, books, photographs, documents or diaries that would more fully explain the railroad or the history of the City of Atlanta.
  2. Artifacts, books, photographs, documents and diaries relating to the agriculture, transportation, or manufacturing of cotton products, timber products or other agricultural products from Atlanta, Texas.
  3. Artifacts, books, photographs, documents, and diaries relating to the City of Atlanta at or prior to 1900. These materials will assist in showing Atlanta’s early development.
  4. Information to include artifacts, books, photographs, documents, and diaries of early citizens of Atlanta including “founding fathers,” influential citizens, those making significant military or civilian contributions or accomplishments and others worthy of note.
  5. Artifacts, books, photographs, documents, and diaries relating to the indigenous people of the area as well as those who settled and developed the area around the City of Atlanta.

Items which do not fall into one of these previous categories are to be considered and if the Atlanta Historical Museum Board of Directors agrees that they are of prime historical importance shall be accepted. However, these items should be of great historical importance to be actively sought or accepted.
